Jazz Institute
Newport, Rhode Island
Spring 2005
The existing site used for the annual Newport Jazz Festival is adjacent to Fort Adams, a decommissioned Coastal Artillery Post. The goal was to analyse a classic jazz song "Lester Leaps In" by using a mapping diagram and utilizing this information to design a Jazz Institute.
When mapping the chorus we chose, we were restricted to rectilinear shapes. By using themes, A's and B's, tension and compression, vertical and horizontal, and continuous and discontinuous, we analyzed the chorus and created mapping diagrams. The mapping diagram shown above represents vertical and horizontal elements in the chorus. I translated high pitch notes or drastic changes in notes with solid vertical shapes. Subtle notes were represented by white horizontal shapes. Collage of musical instruments was added to integrate further detail using the instruments heard in the song. I used the piano, trumpet and saxophone.
These elements were applied to the site to create a campus for the Jazz institute. Diagrams were also studied in section using relief models. The Jazz institute would consist of a music school with dorms and rehearsal spaces. A museum, restaurant and water taxi station were incorporated to attached the public and create a vibrant cultural district.
